There’s a longstanding debate among old-school music lovers about whether Beatles’ records should be played in mono or stereo. Sheldon Draper, owner of In the Groove (Vintage and Collector Records), takes an unequivocal stance. “Monophonic,” he says, “to me, is the way they recorded it originally in the first place. They didn’t record it in stereo. So when you’re listening to a monophonic recording…you’re hearing it first-hand the way it was recorded. After, they tried to adapt it into stereo and they could never do it properly back in 1964 or ’63, and they could never get that sound. So in order to transfer to you, the listener, it was advisable to stay with a mono sound.”
