I've been to Darbar twice. The first time I had the lunch special with a beef curry (don't recall exactly what kind), and thought that it was bland, uninteresting, and it had no heat at all, surprising because I ordered it "hot" The second time I was invited to dinner with a visiting relative. I was reluctant to agree to this restaurant due to my previous experience, but we went nonetheless. This time, I ordered the lamb dansak, and was completely blown away. It was definitely among the best dishes I have ever eaten at a restaurant. The flavour was bold and complex but balanced, and with enough heat to make the dish exciting to eat. I had a taste of the other dishes at the table, which ranged from good to so-so, but my order was truly excellent. Both times, the service was prompt and polite, and the staff was very attentive without being intrusive. If all of the dishes on the menu were comparable to my last visit, I would not hesitate to give Darbar five stars for food. Unfortunately, many items are underperformers. Overall, if you didn't like Darbar, it's worth another shot - you probably just ordered the wrong item the first time. Read more

We were looking for a place to watch the Euro 2012 final and we decided to visit this place. When we walked in, the place was empty, apparently the downstairs doesn't open until much later than the upstairs. So, we decided to head upstairs. It was empty, there were only three people behind the bar (all servers) and us. We chose the table which was facing the TV screens. We asked the one server if she could lower the music and turn up the volume on the TVs. She asked her manager and gladly did so, she was very kind about it. The upstairs is huge, there are tons of tables and a few pool tables as well. There are also a ton of TV screens throughout the whole area. We ordered a bunch of appetizers as we were going to be there for a while. We first ordered the chicken wings. We ordered the first batch with mild barbeque sauce, and the second batch with honey mustard sauce. The mild barbeque ones were okay, but the honey mustard ones were awesome! I highly recommend the honey mustard ones. The only thing I found about the wings were that they were expensive, only eight small wings for $10, pretty pricey if you ask me. Then we ordered the smokehouse poutine; pretty good poutine but again, very pricey, $11 and it was a small dish. The next item was the spinach dip, this dip is beyond amazing, you definitely need to try it! It comes with a large serving of pitas and the spinach dip was warmed to perfection, AMAZING! After that, we tried the brie calzone, which was a huge disappointment. It was just a huge pocket of air, with a small lining of brie cheese and a small salad on the side, very disappointing. I wouldn't order it again only because it cost $10 and it wasn't that good. The service was okay, nothing out of the ordinary. I would visit again and try a few different items. Visited twice in the last 10 days and LOVED IT. Once was a Saturday afternoon 12:30ish and it was very crowded but lucked into a seat once the food was ready. More recently was a weekday 4:30ish, much quieter but still a few patrons. Either way, food is made to order - might take 5-10 mins. but worth the wait and fun to watch. We have had a total of 2 little burgers and 3 regular (double patty) cheeseburgers so far and they are flavourful, well cooked but tender, so good you can (and want to) taste the meat itself. Buns are soft with a nice chew, sesame seeded. We kept it simple with lettuce, relish, pickles, ketchup but you can go crazy with wide selection of toppings. Fries are in peanut oil, gorgeous brown and slightly crisp but fluffy inside. Huge portion even for regular, as others have said. Nice to see Coke products in the machines and Heinz ketchup for fries. Great spirit among the staff, focused and attentive and seem to be happy to be there, which must be a compliment because the kitchen is wide open for customers to watch the whole scene. The place was kept very clean. There is nothing frozen on site, which explains the fresh taste. Very simple, straightforward menu. No need to consider combos and deals, it's burgers, add drink or fries if you want or not. Keep up the great work and please consider a second location in west end Kingston! Read more

We went to Atomica on a weekday for lunch and got a seat by the window. The decor is really unique and we could see how the place could easily fill up and become very loud since it is all one big room (plus a patio). Thankfully, it was very quiet during the hour we were there (11:30ish) since it was so early in the day. The server was very professional, attentive without being pushy. The funghi pizza was apparently very good but my dining companion said that a big-box store carries a frozen one that is even tastier. I created my own with spicy tomato sauce, pulled chicken, feta and roasted red peppers, which was very nice. Overall, the quality is good and the price is a little high but it's a nice occasional dining out venue and they support local growers, which is appreciated. Read more

Based on the reviews of this place, we decided to give it a try. The restaurant is really small, probably only about 10 small tables. The servers are very kind and attentive. It was a tad confusing as we had about three different servers throughout our lunch. The sushi chefs were not very kind, they seemed a bit put out, as if they didn't enjoy where they were. The seaweed salad and miso soup are amazing! I loved the way they decorated the plate for the seaweed salad, very cute! The sushi was really good, it came out quickly and it tasted delicious. I highly recommend the K-Rock roll, it is deep-fried to perfection! The only thing is that the K-Rock roll is about $12.95, but for eight pieces, it isn't too bad. Our total came out to $83 for four people, a tad pricey but, we polished all of the sushi, it was that good! I highly recommend this place, not only is the food good, the servers are very kind. Phnom Penh may distract or even confuse you with its quirky interior, but its friendly service and mouth watering cuisine make up for all of that. It’s late spring; Summer is on the verge of taking over, but it’s not apparent today. Though the temperature is mild, rain has been pounding down in erratic spurts throughout the morning. The restaurant is located on King St. East just off of Princess St. It is away from the bustling vehicles, but still close enough to feel the excitement radiating from “the Heart of Kingston.” I escape the daggers of rain and duck into the rustic building. I am greeted promptly and warmly by a waiter and given a table. I’m impressed with the service at this point. Once at my table, I take a look around. The walls are splashed with deep reds and greens and large landscapes hang delicately around the room. It feels quaint at first glance, but then I’m slightly confused. They are offering me Thai and Cambodian cuisine, but the paintings are clearly from all different cultures and there are paper lanterns and Christmas lights decorating the restaurant. Maybe it isn’t just me who’s confused about ethnicity. The waiter returns in a mere moment with water and menus. Again, I am impressed. That is until the glass draws my attention to the small and slightly sticky table in front of me. Owner and chef, Lay Soleak, emerges from the kitchen for a light conversation. Though this may seem over the top, he repeats his actions when the next group comes in. It isn’t special treatment for a critic; it’s just the way he is. During the conversation, I learn that Soleak took over the restaurant in November of last year. Phnom Penh is his first venture. He has no official training in cuisine, but comes from Cambodia where he learned about the food. The last owners also showed him a thing or two before they left. I’ll see if it’s enough. I order Thai Curry ($10)—this price reflects the rest of the menu—and wait only minutes until the food is brought to me. The plate is placed in front of me and I am overwhelmed by the sheer size of the helping. But quality trumps quantity. On my dish are a number of items: strips of chicken, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, green beans and a side of rice. This is all smothered in red curry sauce. Though not exactly a pretty presentation, I am very tempted by this meal. The spices of the curry sauce bounce in the air around me, pulling the envious stares of my fellow diners toward my plate. Without another second of hesitation, I jump into my first ever experience with Thai food. At first, all I can taste is the sauce; it is an explosion of flavour. Though it has a kick, it is not completely overwhelming like the green curry sauce—an option that is offered with this dish. The broccoli and cauliflower are cooked to perfection and soaked in the hot curry sauce. My teeth grind down, crumbling them to nothing but flavour. The white rice is cold and lacks all aspects of life, especially colour. Though it cannot stand on its own, a splash of the fiery sauce changes all of that. The chicken is tantalizingly slippery with sauce. And unlike other places, they are not skimpy with their meat. There is more than enough on my plate. Individually, these ingredients are not so special, but together, the succulent vegetables, mild chicken, plain rice and red curry sauce, create a sublime puzzle of food, fitting together deliciously. Though the interior with its mismatched themes and objects is somewhat tacky, there are many upsides to eating at Phnom Penh. The quality of the cuisine is as large as the quality, but the price isn’t. The amount of food you receive for $10 is unreal; it’s sure to fill anyone. And it’s anyone that eats here.
