I'd heard about this place from several people I knew, but it was never a place that interested me. I think a big part of that was the location, in that silly little mall/office building.
We went there to celebrate my fathers birthday, and my first impression was that it was nice, but a little dark. In fact my mother had to step out into the "mall" area just to read her menu.
I ordered the shepherds pie (it was the cheapest on the menu and I'm not a big meat eater), as did my boyfriend. My mom ordered the chicken fried steak and my dad had the porterhouse. It took over an hour to get our food, the waitress claimed that the steak had to have some special magical way of cooking and that's why it took so long. The small of smoke and fire extinguisher told another story.
When our food arrived I thought "Really? That's it?". The portion seemed so small, and the side salad was laughable. However once I started eating I really enjoyed the meal, as did my family, and in the end I wasn't even able to finish it. Then we all got free desert, some sort of cheesecake thing that was pure awesomeness.
So in the end, we all really enjoyed our meals and would return again. Hopefully with a shorter wait though.

I saw this place featured on a food network teaser for a new show. Surprised when I talked to people and they all knew the place!
So I took the 45 minute drive and it was well worth it.

Our party of two ordered a 9oz steak and shrimp fajitas. Fajitas were fantastic but steak was quite tough though cooked to order - had much better quality steak, I am thinking..We both found the gravy to be very salty and lumpy, and the steamed veggies tasted odd. Server was very friendly, helpful, and I enjoyed the atmosphere. Will probably be back but would not order the steak again.

I brought my family to the Hyland this week and as always the food was excellent (and too much!) and the service was very friendly. Food is always delivered promptly, the restaurant is always clean, and overall, it is just a nice meal out with the family. I definitely recommend to any families visiting Port Perry. We spend out summers at Bobcaygeon and visit Cody's with friends and family as often as possible. Wish there was chinese food 1/2 as good available in Burlington where we spend the winter. Their Lemon Chicken is to die for and we also all love the Shrimp and Peaches. The servings are so generous we always have lots to take home and enjoy the next day.

I'm not sure what restaurantica12 problem is with this restaurant. Me and my husband comes here about once a month and it's fantastic, except simetimes when he gets the full rack of ribs one of them isn't the greatest. And honestly it's the best meal for your buck. Will recommended it to anybody who isn't fussy on where they eat just what they eat. Good home cooked meals. Yummy yummy!

one of our usual food places, as we can walk to it, and the food is good. The owners have a great attitude (desert first for the kids!), are very friendly, as are the staff. ( Only thing I would change is maybe the menu could change up a little more often.) Just an example-my 5 year old came in holding a birthday card she received in the mail that day, and we were going for lunch. The owner came and talked to us for a bit, engaging my daughter in a little talk, then after lunch, the whole serving staff, plus owner, came out of the kitchen singing happy birthday to my little girl, with a free plate of deserts, with her name written in chocolate. How awesome is that?!?
