An out of the way little house that looks like a local take out pizza joint. Walk in and there are a few tables. Sit down and order and get some of the best Italian food I have had in Ottawa. Ask what the special is, you never know. We stared wit a sausage appetizer that is to die for, flavorful and spiced just right. There were 6 of us so we all ordered different things and tried each others. There was not a loser in the bunch. Skip the insalata, it is just greens on a plate. The veal picatta was outstanding and the pastas were great. Get the house wine, the night we were there it was a very good valpolicella. Many places are fit for different occasions but I believe that Stephanie's is a restaurant for any occasion from a business meeting to a birthday party. The atmosphere is warm and keeps the costumer in the mood for some good hearty food. The elevated table positions make the costumer feel more important, but could be a nuisance to older people. The only thing about the decor that striked me as negative were the ugly-green coloured chairs. I arrived earlier during dinner service so I guess I caught the staff off guard and that is why I had to seat myself. When the server did arrive however, he was very polite and showed much professionalism. He was there for me when i needed him and disappeared when I didn't. Fantastic job on his part. My dish arrived faster than i anticipated. Presentation was fair, and rather appealing to the eyes. The texture of the lamb as well as the taste made for a very nice experience during every bite. I was not a fan of the false advertising of scalloped potatoes thought. I would say i was served sliced and spiced potatoes which I enjoyed none the less. Overall a very nice plate. The dishes at Stephanie's are conservative in size so do not expect to be going home with leftovers. To end off the experience they have a vast selection of cakes and pies to satisfy every palate. Be warned however, they will bring every cake to the table. I would suggest to the staff, 1 slice of each on a tray to bring to the table instead so that the process of choosing doesn't take a lifetime. As you can see it isn't perfect but I believe Stephanie's is a swell place to bring your sweetheart for a date or your boss for a meeting. The price is reasonable and you get what you pay for. The chicken salad has got to be the best I've ever tasted, FRESHLY (in front of my eyes) grilled chicken on top of a fresh salad topped with a delicious dressing!! Went to this restaurant after watching "You Gotta Eat Here", was our first Poutine ever and it was quite delicious. I ate a fabulous sandwich and my sister said her sandwich was the best vegetarian sandwich she ever had. Desserts looked really appealing but were not as amazing as we expected. Been twice in the past month-once for dinner and a lunch. The space is small and has been busy but accomodating on both occasions. You can buy fresh fish to take home from a counter as you come in. They serve a basket of warm little grainy rolls to start along with glasses of water. My companion's halibut, declared the best ever, sat perched on julliened veggies with a light citrus sauce as the days special. My jumbo shrimps were perfectly done in a garlic sauce. The glasses of wine were more generous than one usually finds. The fish and chips came with fresh cut fries and a small homemade coleslaw. Nice and crispy. Our only disappointments were a cup of lobster bisque-thin broth vs the creamy concoction I was expecting(Maybe I don't know bisque) and crab cakes which came as two large balls with a uniform minced texture. Hard to tell it was crab but tasted ok-Generally everything coming from the kitchen looked wonderful. Read more
