I came here for lunch a few months ago and was very impressed. We arrived just as the place opened up; the upstairs dining area had not been opened yet. Regardless, I asked if we could have a table on the upper level and the wait staff accommodated our request and opened up the upstairs area and we were given the option to have our choice of any table we wanted. We chose a table on the North side of the restaurant with a great view of the By-ward Market. My burger tasted a little dry but as I had never tried buffalo or bison before I didn't know if that was normal or not. Aside from that the atmosphere was so nice I probably would have even enjoyed a bad meal in that restaurant, sitting where I was. Read more

I read all the reviews prior to making reservations there. It seemed to me that the bad reviews were from folks that did not know what to expect and were surprised when they got there. The web page is quite clear of the menu and venue. I saw it and was not surprised when I got into the restaurant. We went for dinner before a show at the NAC. The server was at our table promptly and even asked if we were going to a show so that she could ensure our service and food would allow us plenty of time to get to the show. Very thoughtful and the service remained top notch throughout. Our appetizers were great. Our dinners were very good, the fish was fresh, the steak was done exactly as asked, the duck confit melted in your mouth except for the crispy skin...which was perfect. The sides were appropriate for the meal and also delicious but the 3 root vegetable mash that came with the Duck was extraordinary and deserves mention..Some had desserts which were declared as a real treat. We were in and out in time for our show but never hurried or short changed in our dinner. A very good experience overall. Pricey? Well, it was everything that was posted on the web page so no surprised at all. A very good spot with very good food and caring , professional servers. Just what you want for a good night out. I've had the pleasure of experiencing multiple sushi restaurants in Ottawa, but 168 Sushi in Merivale by far stands out from the rest in regards to the variety available and quality of taste. My fiance and I recommend this location to our friends and family, as well as taking advantage of their fast and effective delivery service. The buffet at both lunch and dinner is reasonably priced and it is very easy to get your money's worth out of the food. Personal Highlights: -Miso Soup -Curry Chicken -Mango and Crab Rolls -Pork Dumplings -Salmon Roses The restaurant feels more like a night-club than a sushi buffet, but I have grown attached to the overall atmosphere. The service sometimes forgets to bring an item on the card you fill out once in a while, I recommend filling out one card per table for everyone instead of having each person fill out their own card at the same table to make it easier for the chefs (which you get to watch prep the food). I have to prempt everything that I am going to say with I did enjoy the food so much that I may go there again for dinner (am on contract in the area). The hot and sour sea-food soup appeared to be small, but when the flavours filled my mouth, and I discovered 3 large cleaned shrimp (only tail bit remaining) I'm happy to say I'm quite pleased with this selection. The mango salad was not available as a 'plain' mango salad, but also came with shrimp, making it $5-$7 more than I usually pay for mango salad. Again the shrimp were large, clean and fresh (good 'bite', not soggy at all), but the dressing seemed made at the last minute and didn't contain the rich complexity that the soup did. On Wednesdays Montana's has an "all you can eat beef rib night", its worth the trip and go there hungry. They have 2 choices of beef ribs "back" or "side" ribs, back ribs are more tender and have more meat on them. Its a fantastic meal and very delicious, I find myself dreaming of those ribs the rest of the week. Sadly they do not offer the same meal any other night of the week, its a one night only affair, the rest of the week they offer only a pork bone substitute for "Ribs" which is not at all like on rib night. Another annoying thing is you cannot switch rib type once you start so choose carefully. I know they have Rib night in several other Montana's restaurants in the Ottawa area on the same night but I don't know if it's chain wide, check with your local restaurant. This restaurant is such a contradiction. It has the potential to become the best restaurant in Ottawa (if not the country). All the elements are in place. Awesome, atmosphere, great staff (mostly), and good food. The only stick in the ointment is a single toxic personality in the guise of a server, who seems intent on destroying all of that and ensuring that you never come back. She's a bit older than the other servers (who are all excellent), but this is not about age. Irene's up the road seems like an older crowd of patrons and servers, but they are awesome...but I digress, this not about Irene's, I just wanted to show that the contradiction at Patty's boils down to one personality.
