I came here for lunch a few months ago and was very impressed. We arrived just as the place opened up; the upstairs dining area had not been opened yet. Regardless, I asked if we could have a table on the upper level and the wait staff accommodated our request and opened up the upstairs area and we were given the option to have our choice of any table we wanted. We chose a table on the North side of the restaurant with a great view of the By-ward Market. My burger tasted a little dry but as I had never tried buffalo or bison before I didn't know if that was normal or not. Aside from that the atmosphere was so nice I probably would have even enjoyed a bad meal in that restaurant, sitting where I was. Read more

I have to prempt everything that I am going to say with I did enjoy the food so much that I may go there again for dinner (am on contract in the area). The hot and sour sea-food soup appeared to be small, but when the flavours filled my mouth, and I discovered 3 large cleaned shrimp (only tail bit remaining) I'm happy to say I'm quite pleased with this selection. The mango salad was not available as a 'plain' mango salad, but also came with shrimp, making it $5-$7 more than I usually pay for mango salad. Again the shrimp were large, clean and fresh (good 'bite', not soggy at all), but the dressing seemed made at the last minute and didn't contain the rich complexity that the soup did. This restaurant is such a contradiction. It has the potential to become the best restaurant in Ottawa (if not the country). All the elements are in place. Awesome, atmosphere, great staff (mostly), and good food. The only stick in the ointment is a single toxic personality in the guise of a server, who seems intent on destroying all of that and ensuring that you never come back. She's a bit older than the other servers (who are all excellent), but this is not about age. Irene's up the road seems like an older crowd of patrons and servers, but they are awesome...but I digress, this not about Irene's, I just wanted to show that the contradiction at Patty's boils down to one personality. I went to the new Beijing Legend restaurant on Bank with my wife and our friends. My wife is Chinese and is picky about your 'authentic flavour'. The atmosphere of this place is very nice and better than other Chinese restaurants I have been. The workers all wear nice uniform and great you with a smile. This restaurant has only been open a few weeks so the service was a little slow. I don't think it was a big concern as it was much faster than most restaurants around(just not compared to normal Chinese food). The best thing about Beijing Legend was the taste of the food. We ordered a fish dish, pork dish with mushrooms and a tofu dish. We started the meal with a nice soup. Each dish brought a smile to our faces and we were surprised how good it tasted. The portions were large and even with 4 of us we had to take some home. Currently Beijing legend is CASH ONLY however I believe that will change soon. They also will have their liquer licence soon so once they have that it will be an even better experience. My wife and I look forward to going again soon. Read more

If you only have a one hour lunch then this is definitely NOT the place for you to eat at that time. We arrived and it was busy. The place seems cramped but it appearred to be clean. We had reserved a table for noon and waited a while to get seated. When the waitress finally made it to our table we ordered drinks and our food at the same time. It took a long time just to get our drinks and a very long time for our food. It ended up being an hour and a half lunch. Most other restaurants in the area offer a quick lunch so people can get back to work in a timely fashion. This is where The Wood falls drastically short. The food was good, this I will not dispute. By burger was juicy and cooked perfectly and the salad with balsamic dressing was fresh and nice also. Unfortunately the speed of service will have to keep me away from this restaurant. Read more
