On the weekend I dropped by because I learned that they had Lugtread Lagered Ale on tap. The hostess said that they were serving Sunday brunch and that sitting at the bar was awkward. However, soon, a waiter brought in a bar stool and soon I was sipping my fave beer on tap. It was a sunny day so the view was great, bartender friendly and as a bonus there was a keyboard player singing a whole host of great songs. You get crayons to colour on the tables and there are funny quotes around the restaurant. My only problem is that when I ordered my food which was a very simple order, it was wrong. My caesar salad had carrots in it and no croutons! Although the food is great and mistakes are made, it is just inconvenient. Aside from the mistakes, it is a great place to go to just hang out with friends, and have a drink or 2. The servers and waitresses are very kind, and they are always on top of everything. Kismet is my go-to place for Indian/Bangladeshi food in Waterloo. I usually get take out because the space is pretty small, and I've never had a problem with the people at the cash. My partner is not a fan of cilantro and they've never given as a problem when we ask for items without. Their naan is the best I've had in Waterloo (Grain of Salt in Cambridge is the only place I've tried with better naan). Much better than the sort of pancakey stuff I've seen at other places *cough*Curry in a Hurry. I really like their aloo gobi, which is potato and caulifower with curry spices. There is a part of the culinary world that values presentation, new combinations of ingredients, and the avant-garde over good flavours. I have heard it said as almost a criticism on cooking shows that the chef “just” makes really delicious food. Blacktree definitely belongs to that school of thought. I found the meal to be a tour de force of form over substance. The presentations were beautiful, I could see that a lot of work went into the dishes, but the flavours were disappointing. Like Patricia below, I found the flavours did not complement one another. The actual proteins on the entrees were wonderful in and of themselves because they were of the highest quality and expertly prepared. But in each case the rest of the dish as a whole left all three of us flat. I can’t be quite as kind about the desserts, they were simply not good. The fig upside down cake was actually inedible. The service was excellent, we enjoyed our waiter and he was very attentive. But we found the pacing of the meal very slow. Sometimes this might be exactly what you want, but for us it was a work night and we didn’t like having to wait about an hour between the courses. It was a culinary experience that I enjoy having once in a long while, but there are so many restaurants that “just” serve delicious food that it will be a long time before I go back to Blacktree. My husband and I have been to Boo's twice. On both occassions we had a wonderful time and meal (as well as wine). The server was extremely gracious and considerate. He came to check on our meal a couple of times, but was not intrusive whatsoever (allowing for an intimate and romantic evening). The food was delicious. The servings were of good size (in our opinion) -- I was very full when I left, as was my husband. We had crab cakes for an appetizer - these were rich in real crab meat with little filler. As for mains, I had a salmon dish (the special) and my husband had Boo's signature dish (a steak). Ingredients were fresh, and there was a nice serving of vegetables (also flavourful and well done). My husband and I are so lucky there is a restaurant in Fonthill of the calibre of Zest. It is as good as a "Toronto" fine dining. The service is wonderful from the time you enter the front door, and until you leave. There have been times I've been thrilled with the menu, and other times not so much, but still be able to find something that pleased me well. My only criticism, people who have Celiac disease really get left sitting by the curb. Although at Zest they make an effort for those of us who need a gluten free dinner, other steps could be taken. If there are appetizers that are served with bread, rice crackers could be substituted for gluten free diners. Also, there is a wonderful gluten free bakery in Chipawa, that makes wonder bread and glutten free cakes.They even deliver to Fonthill. I just wish more restaurants would educate themselves in gluten free dining. It's not rocket science, and more people by the day are being diagnosed. When my husband and I want to celebrate, we go to Zest. I'm thinking of holding our 25th Anniversary Party at Zest, and inviting 30 of our friends. I know, Zest would not let us down. Read more

My family and I have been patron's of the Charcoal Steakhouse for about 40 years - since it's location on Weber Street where Zhers is now. I was a little girl when we used to go there on Sundays. In recent years, my friends and I attend Martini's for birthdays and other special occasions so I would say between the Charcoal, Martini's and Del Dante's, I attend there for dinner about 6 or 7 times a year (average once every 2 months). The Charcoal has always been my favourite restaurant and I order NOTHING but the "individual meaty ribs" with the brown sugar sauce. I have always been happy that you could order them in Martini's as well. Last night was my birthday, and again my two girlfriend's and I attended Martini's to celebrate. In recent years instead of ordering the rib dinner, I order a French onion soup (the best ever) with 2 of the "individual meaty ribs" (this is how it was stated on the menu). Last night, the ribs came with one bone and was the same size as one rib always was in the past. When I told the waiter I had ordered 2, he said they take out every second bone but you get the meat of both ribs. I advised they had never done that before and the rib (which he said was the meat of two) was the same size as it always was. He got a woman who I assum was a manager and she said "they had always done it that way". My girlfriend and I argued with her saying we had been coming for years and there was always 2 ribs criss-crossed on the plate (2 bones). She said again "they had always done it this way" and then I find out she has only worked there 8 or 9 months (so obviously she had no idea what they had "always done"). I wondered how they did the dinner now as it had always been 6 ribs and my mom and dad split it when they go there (3 each). She said that the dinner is a rack of ribs which is 12 but since every second bone is removed, it looks like 6. Why then had the menu always said "6 individual meaty ribs"? She got the General Manager who offered us an extra rib each and took the item off the bill which was great of him however, I am still concerned with the "new:" presentation on the plate. I don't care what was said (apparently they asked the cook) It was only ONE rib not two. I was told by the waiter that the owner was there and I could talk to him but then was told by the General Manager that he wasn't there. I do appreciate the lengths to which the General Manager went to make my friends and myself happy but if that is what they are doing now, I probably won't order that again as the value for what they call 2 ribs is not worth $7 as it was only a couple of bites. Also, when the reservation was made my girlfriend was asked if it was a special occasion (which they always aske) and they always bring a little desert to share but not this time. As stated this is my favourite restaurant and I hate to complain about it (I have never complaned about it in 40 years) but if this is the chef's decision, someone should talk to him that it really looks like the owners are getting greedy and offering less food for the same price.
